Sophie Hopkins is an accomplished actress whose abilities have been finely honed through comprehensive training at top drama school Identity School of Acting. Her curriculum included screen acting, audition techniques, text interpretation, Stanislavski and Meisner methods, audiobook narration, monologue delivery, radio play performance, improvisation, and voice modulation. This extensive training significantly contributed to her successful portrayal of April MacLean in the BBC Three “Doctor Who” spin-off “Class,” where she gained notable recognition for her role.
In April 2016, Sophie Lisa Hopkins secured the role of April MacLean in the BBC Three Doctor Who spin-off Class. Her character, April, a student at Coal Hill School, was depicted as “socially awkward” yet “compassionate, kind”, and occasionally “extraordinarily brave”, likened to the iconic character Buffy from British pop culture. Initially drawn to the project under the impression it resembled Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hopkins auditioned without knowing it was connected to Doctor Who. Throughout the series’ production, she resided in Cardiff alongside fellow actress Vivian Oparah.
Additionally, in 2016, Hopkins marked her feature film debut with a lead role in the Irish horror-thriller Brackenmore. Returning to the role of April MacLean, she appeared in six Class audio plays by Big Finish in 2018. Subsequently, she featured in Greta Bellamacina’s 2019 film Hurt by Paradise and contributed to Trickster virtual live readings in 2020 to support NHS fundraising efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her recent credits include an episode of the Sky Max series Wolfe and the Hallmark Channel film Jolly Good Christmas. Furthermore, Hopkins is set to appear in the upcoming ITV series The Long Shadow.
